Analysis of popular title sequences for our choosen media piece
importance of title sequence
The importance of title sequence is to give us a feel of what the movie could be about and the mood of the movie could be. Also it gives us an insight of some of the main characters.
Thank you for smoking - http://shadowplaystudio.com/smoking.html
This title sequence is based around smoking, everything to the song lyrics to the background of a cigarette package. Also the sound is non-diegetic with a man's voice singing about smoking and the effects of it. Also have the classic music tells me that though this title sequence was done along time ago, seems like the title sequence is for a comedy movie. this is because of the music is joyful and catchy. Finally the credits are all lied out on boxes of cigarettes which keeps in the theme of smoking.
James Bond - Golden Eye Title sequenceThe title sequence is from classical James Bond movie, golden eye, and also the title sequence is typical of a james bond movie. The gun shot in the beginning connotes the title golden eye. The bullet is golden and the camera angle of the gun looks like a eye and also shows a women's eye later on. the tradition of a James bond movie is that there are lots of girls shown in the title sequence. The next objects that are falling from above are symbols that relate to Russia and their political.
Most of the imagery is animated and colours are bold and may relate to the setting of the whole movie which is in Russia. The sound is Non-diegetic and a female voice is singing throughout the whole title sequence and includes the movie name in the lyrics.
Terminator
Out of the four opening title sequence that we chosen , i thought that this one was the worst one. Although the background is the shapes of the letters in the word " The Terminator", there isn't a lot to this opening scene. the credits are displayed like a computer data, this may mean that high tech computers and machinery may be evolved in the actually movie.
The sound is Non diegetic and the music is the classical theme song for terminator. The music has suspense and drama in the sound, also includes heavy beats. you could also argue that one particular noise may be a sound of metal hitting each other.
lucky number slevin
this title sequence that we picked is from a movie called Lucky Number Sleven and although this clip is 10 minutes long we couldn't found a two minute clip of the opening scene Lucky Number Sleven.
In the beginning we have title credits and the background looks like a type of book. We also have slow, quiet and gentle music throughout the first minute or so. This clip out of the four is the only one that has both Diegetic and non-diegetic sounds. The Diegetic sound is from the Tv that is turn on in a room and the diegetic sound is the smooth background music that i previously talking about. then the camera focuses on the telephone which may connote that there is business being down or an expected phone call.
North by northwest
this title sequence from North by Northwest is made by Saul Bass. the lines create the background of building in New York. also the directions of the lines go north and northwest , showing that is connotes the title name of the movie.
the setting is set in New york city and the weather is a typical new york weather which is clear and sunny. all the characters are blue coloured people, that are in the business working class workers.
the music used in the opening scene is gives a thriller and exciting feel to it, also it sounds very dramatic. Saul Bass uses Non-diegetic music which i think that he would have created just for this music. finally we get to the opening scene where a unknown guy as killed a man , but we dont see any identity in this short clip at the end,
